This ceremony was taken from the Confederate Chaplains handbook.

The Chaplain, Harry Bennett uses a white rope
(white for Purity) with frayed ends (frality of life) with three knots (Father, Son and Holy Ghost)
and ties them together with three wraps of the rope.
He wraps the rope around their right wriste 3 times and ties it. When he unties them they are wed.
At that time in history, all the Southern women
had done donated all their jewerly to the Cause.
Even all the Churches had given their bells (bronze) to be cast into cannons.
In finishing the knot,
the couple will understand that only together,
and through continued effort can they create a lasting union.
That is where the term "tying the knot" comes from.

Sarah and her father Harry Jones.

Commander Tom Lavender
