Noah Altmans's Bird

A Bird drawn to loving detail for his children has now faded with time but restored to life. Grandaddy Noah Altman was a school teacher and a very good one. He taught school in Charlton County. He was always known for his artwork. He drew a bird for all 8 of his children. One saturday night he sat down and took upon himself to start a beautiful bird for all of his children. He gave it to them when they were about grown. The drawings were kept for many years in trunks for his children. He was talented with all his school work. and could draw anything to be imagined of beauty.

Grandaddy married Julia Ann Barber, first child and oldest daughter of Obediah and Nancy Stephens Barber. Noah was also a woods rider. He would leave on Sunday evening and not come home until the next Saturday.

The son of Jacob Altman, Noah spent all of his days in the Charlton county area. And also farmed during his later years. He was always known for sitting at an old table in the living room drawing, writing, reading and studing the Bible a lot. Always a kerosene lamp sat on his table.

Grandaddy Noah died at the age of 74, and as far as is known today only one of these birds have been preserved and kept through the years.

(The above drawing was resketched from the drawing of the original bird by Tina Highsmith Rowell.)
