Roster of Company "G"


The Okefenokee Rifles were men mostly from Charlton County, was organized August 15, 1861. It's officers were Captain William H. Dasher, 1st Lt. Robert N. King, 2nd Lt. James F. Smith, and Jr. 2nd Lt. Aaron Lee.

ANDREWS, Frances A. - Private August 15, 1861. Wounded and captured at Monocacy, Md. July 9, 1864. Released at Camp Hamilton, Va. September 21, 1864. Admitted to Jackson Hospital at Richmond, Va. September 23, 1864, and furloughed for 40 days from September 27, 1864. No later record.

ARNETT, John - 5th Sergeant August 15, 1861. Elected Captain May 8, 1862. Wounded at 2d Manassas, Va. August 28, 1862. Died of wounds at Middleburg, Va. September 6, 1862.

BACHLOTT, Alexander - Private August 15, 1861. Died in Hospital in 1864.

BACHLOTT, Joseph C. - Private August 15, 1861. Discharged, disability, October 1, 1861.

BATTEN, Henry M. - Private August 15, 1861. Killed at Spotsylvania, Va. May 12, 1864.

CARTER, Wesley - Private August 15, 1861. Admitted to C.S.A. General Military Hospital #4, at Wilmington, N.C., with typhoid fever, June 19, 1863. Killed at wilderness, Va. May 6, 1864.

CHANCEY, Asa -Private March 4, 1862. Captured and paroled at Middleburg, Va. March 20, 1864. Dropped from rolls March 26, 1864.

CHANCEY, Samuel - Private March 4, 1862. Captured near Petersburg, Va. March 25, 1865. Released at Point Lookout, Md. June 26, 1865. Born in Ware County, Ga. in 1826.

CHASE, Charles A. - Private August 15, 1861. Discharged, on account of ascites, from Chimborazo Hospital #2, at Richmond, Va., July 22, 1863.

CHISOM, Aaron E. (or Chism) - Private August 15, 1861. Died of Pneumonia in General Hospital #1 at Danville, Va. September 6, 1862.

CHISOM, James (or Chism) - Private August 15, 1861. Died of disease at St. Simon Island, Ga. December 13, 1861.

CLARK, Andrew F. - 2d Corporal August 15, 1861. Private in 1864. Wounded in 1864. Roll dated November 4, 1864, last on file, shows him absent, wounded. No later record.

CLARKE, J. Henry - Private March 4, 1862. Surrendered, Appomattox, Va. April 9, 1865. Born in Georgia.

CREWS, Noah - Private March 8, 1862. Captured at Harrisonburg, Va. September 25, 1864. Paroled at Point Lookout, Md. and transferred to Aiken's Landing, Va. for exchange, March 17, 1865. Received at Boulware & cox's Wharves, James River, Va., March 19, 1865. No later record. Born in Pierce County, Ga. January 1, 1842 or 1845. Died at Confederate Soldiers’ Home, Atlanta, Ga.., February 17, 1917.

HERB, Cuthbert Barnwell (or Charley or Charlie) - Private August 15, 1861. Appointed Musician. Captured at Farmville, Va. April 9, 1865. Released at Newport News, Va. June 24, 1865. Born in Dublin, Ireland, January 1, 1834. Died in Grady Hospital at Atlanta, Ga., August 1939. Buried at Macon, Ga.

HOGANS, James - Private August 15, 1861. Died of disease in Staunton, Va. hospital August 11, 1862.

Pension records show he was wounded in thigh and heel in Wilderness, Va. May 6, 1864, and was at home on wounded furlough close of war. Born in South Carolina in 1827.

PAXTON, Robert - 3d Sergeant August 15, 1861. Elected 1st Lieutenant May 8, 1862; Captain September 6, 1862. Died of bronchitis in General Hospital #4, at Richmond, Va. February 24, 1863.

PETTY, Washington - Private September 18, 1861. Admitted to C.S.A. General Hospital, on account of debility, February 5, 1863. Returned to duty February 6, 1863. Died of disease in 1864.

RENTZ, William D. - Private September 20, 1861. Wounded at Drewry’s Bluff, a. May 16, 1864. roll dated November 4, 1864, last on file, shows him absent, wounded. No later record.

* ROBINSON, Mark - Private August 15, 1861. Appointed 5th Sergeant May 8, 1862. Captured at Fisher's Hill, Va. September 22, 1864. Paroled in 1865. Received at Boulware and Cox's Wharves, James River, Va. for exchange, March 19, 1865. Mark and Mathew (below) were twin sons of James Robinson. Mark married Sarah Jane Barber on November 30, 1854, and fortunately was not a casualty.

*ROBINSON, Mathew - Private August 15, 1861. Killed at Fredericksburg, Va. December 13, 1862. A twin of Mark R. (above) and son of James Robinson.

ROBINSON, Noah - 2d Sergeant August 15, 1861. Elected Jr. 2d Lieutenant May 8, 1862; 2d Lieutenant September 6, 1862. Captured at Spotsylvania, Va., May 19, 1864. Released at Fort Delaware, Del. June 16, 1865. Born in Wayne County, Ga. March 28, 1832.

ROBINSON, Robert -Private August 15, 1861. Appointed 2d Sergeant May 8, 1862. Surrendered at Appomattox, Va. April 9, 1865.

SCOTT, Benjamin - Private August 15, 1861. Died of typhoid fever in General Hospital #16, March 6, 1863.

TAYLOR, Eaton - Private March 4, 1862. Wounded at 2d Manassas, Va. August 28, 1862; Fort Steadman, Va. March 25, 1865. Captured in Richmond, Va. hospital, April 3, 1865, and was a prisoner of war there May 28, 1865. Resident of Georgia since April 12, 1834.

THOMPSON, Calvin - Private March 4, 1862. Roll dated November 4, 1864, last on file, shows him absent, sick. Pension records show he was at home on furlough close of war.

THOMPSON, James A. - 1st Corporal August 15, 1861. Wounded at Monocacy, Md. July 9, 1864. Admitted to 1st Division Hospital, 20th Army Corps, U.S.A., with chronic bronchitis December 24, 1864, and for same disease to General Field Hospital 20th Army Corps, Savannah, Ga., January 19, 1865. Disposition not stated.

THOMPSON, Richard - Private August 15, 1861. Died of Phthisis in Gordonsville, Va. hospital August 24, 1862.

TODD, Jacob G. - Private August 15, 1861. Wounded September 19, 1862. Wounded in leg near Shepardstown, W.Va. August 25, 1864. Roll dated November 4, 1864, last on file, shows him absent, wounded. Pension records show he was at home on wounded furlough close of war. Born in Tattnall County, Ga. November 14, 1828.

VICKERY, Robert - Private August 15, 1861. Transferred to Company C, May 8, 1862. Appointed 4th Sergeant. Wounded at Spotsylvania, Va. May 12, 1864. Died of wounds May 13, 1864.

VICKERY, Solomon - Private August 15, 1861. Wounded and captured at Cedar Creek, Va. October 19, 1864. No later record.

WAINRIGHT, Elias K. - Private March 4, 1862. Discharged on account of anchylosed and distorted wrist, caused by bruise from wagon wheel received in service at Richamond, Va. August 9, 1862. Enlisted as a private in Company "F", 4th Regiment Georgia Cavalry (Clinch’s), August 19, 1863. roll for June 1864, last on file, shows him present. Pension records show he surrendered at Doctortown, Georgia. April 1865. Born in Camden County, Georgia in 1843. Son of James W.

WAINRIGHT, William R. - Private March 4, 1862. In General Hospital #4, at richmond, Va. October 31, 1862. Transferred to Camp Winder, Richmond, Va. December 15, 1862. Died in richmond, Va. hospital September 1, 1863. Son of James W.

WATERS, William - Private August 15, 1861. Killed at 2d Manassas, Va. August 28, 1862.

WILLIAMS, William J. - Private Septgember 1, 1861. Transferred to Company "A", 61st Regiment Georgia Infantry October 12, 1861; to Company "A", 26th Regiment Georgia Infantry December 19, 1861; to Company "B", 4th Regiment Georgia Cavalry (Clinch’s), May 12, 1862.
