26TH GEORGIA REGIMENT (INF.)
ROSTER OF COMPANY "F"
Company "F", The Ware Guards, made up of men mostly
from men of Ware and Pierce Counties (land, later re-designated to Brantley
County), was organized at Waresboro, Ga. on August 26, 1861. At that time
orders were received from Brig. Gen A.r. Lawton & Col C.w. Styles to
rendezvous at Brunswick, Ga. They arrived in Brunswick on August 27th, and
were mustered into service on August 28th, 1861, initially attached to the
13th Regiment Georgia Volunteers, under Colonel C. W. Syles, Commanding. It's
officers were Captain Donald J. McDonald, 1st Lt. Daniel Ezekiel Knowles,
2nd Lt. David Davidson, Jr. 2nd Lt. Thomas C. Lott.
The next muster roll after organization was for
November December 1861, had the following comment: "This company since last
muster has remained at Camp Styles, St. Simons Island, ga. the health of
the company has not been good; the measles of which a mild type has nearly
gone through the Company having prevailed. Upon relettering of the companies
of the Regiment, this Company has been changed from letter "H" to "D" (note
it was later changed again to "F" in May 1862."
The muster roll for January and February 1862 shows the following: "This
Company since last mustered has been moved from St. Simons Island to Brunswick,
a distance of about eight miles. The health of the Company has been good."

CLELAND, John - (1) Listed as Charter member of a Cavalry Company organized
in Pierce Co., Georgia in January, 1961. (2) Company Muster Roll records

Regiment Georgia Infantry (Aug. 26, 1861 to Oct. 31. 1861), at Brunswick
Ga. He is shown to have enlisted in CSA on September 1861. (3) Private, (New)

WILKINSON, James - Private, enlisted on
April 4, 1962 at Waynesville, Georgia, and sworn in by Captain Donald J.
McDonald and Capt Daniel Ezekiel Knowles, Company D (old D), which was later
changed to Company "F", 26th Georgia Regiment. Old family letters indicate
that Private Wilkinson had experienced various illnesses while in service, none
life threatening. On May 4th and 15th, 1862 he wrote home from Camp Smith, Chatham
Co., Georgia that he was not well. On May 25th, 1862, he wrote that his Company was leaving
Savannah for Charleston
and then on to Richmond, Va. On July 11, 1862, he wrote
that his Company had left for Richmond and that he was left behind at
Charleston with measles. From Charleston he was sent to Columbia, S.C. where he spent 15
days in the hospital. He finally caught up with his Regiment again at Richmond, under
Capt D. E. Knoles, which had been in some big fights already. On 12
Feb. 1862, a letters was received by Sarah Miriam Lewis (Wilkinson from James
Jackson Wilkinson saying, later indicate that subject, "James" had died of Variola
(smallpox) on 26 January 1863, being in the Confederate a little over eight
months. One story is, "Subject "James" was taken out of his senses and got
in
the night and went outside and was found the next morning dead in the snow about a half mile from the hospital.
